This is the current electoral map based on RealClearPolitics' state poll averages. For each state, the spread in favor of the leading candidate is displayed; click on this number to see the unrounded spread and the state's number of Electoral College votes. To get an impression of how swings in either direction might affect the election outcome, toggle the map using the links above the map. For example, if you click on "McCain +2", the average spread for every state is skewed two percentage points in McCain's favor, and the electoral vote tally is adjusted accordingly. Click "Tipping Point" to see the minimum amount by which polls must swing to flip the win to the trailing candidate. Note that while current data for all 50 states is incorporated in this map, the District of Columbia is not. In lieu of polling data, DC's three electoral votes are by default awarded to Sen. Obama. Also, for the purposes of the electoral projection, a state is only considered tied if RealClearPolitics considers the average a tie before rounding, which is a rare occurrence. Spreads are generally rounded to save space and to ease reading, but numbers between -0.4 and 0.4 are not rounded, so as to make clear which candidate is leading, albeit barely. |
